Log homes exhibiting a space between the logs are referred to as chinked homes. Historically, this space was filled with a mortar mixture which, over time, would dry and shrink, resulting in air infiltration into and out of the home. Modern "chinked style" log homes now employ the combined use of foam backer rod and synthetic chinking. The foam backer rod is available in a variety of widths and is inserted into each of the spaces present between the logs. Following the placement of the foam backer rod, the flexible, synthetic chinking is applied by hand and "combed" to provide a uniform appearance. This combination of backer rod and synthetic chinking ensures that the structure is air tight for the life of the home. Backer rod and chinking, as well as many other log home products used by Blue Chip Log Homes, are supplied by Sashco of Brighton, Colorado.
Blue Chip Log Homes expertise also allows us to provide our customers with a full-scribe, Scandinavian style log home. Our experience is evident in the careful scribe that joins each log to its partner, and in the solid saddle-notched corners that bring the walls together. The absence of chinking provides for a extremely elegant appearance that accentuates the craftsmanship involved in a full-scribed Scandinavian style log home. | ||||
